Fire and Rescue
How do I obtain a “Burning Permit” and what can I burn?
Burning Permits must be obtained in order to have an open burn in your yard of leaves, brush, or scrap wood. You MAY NOT burn trash, or other illegal material.
Kingfield’s Fire Department is a Volunteer Department. Our Firefighters have full-time jobs and are not able to provide permits “whenever someone wants to burn”.
Burn Permits must be obtained online. Online burn permits are FREE.
Please visit www.maineburnpermit.com and be sure to follow all the restrictions listed on the permit.
These permits can be requested 24 hours a day. Burn times are after 5:00pm.
The only exception to the 5:00 start time is with a steady rain or the area is completely covered in snow. Some towns (Kingfield being one) may allow burning during the daytime depending on the predicted fire danger for that day. In that case you will need to obtain a written one from the Fire Chief or their duly appointed individuals (Leanna in the Town Office).
Burn permits are for wood debris, brush and agriculture burns. (Not TRASH)
Burn permits will be valid for 24 hours. They can not be obtained until 9am on any given day.
You must read and understand the permit you are given. You must have proof (printed or electronic) available upon demand from any fire warden.
You may purchase a burn permit online anytime provided the fire danger is low/moderate.
Information:
Although permits can be purchased 24 hours a day, the default setting for allowable burn times is after 5:00pm and before 9:00am for unorganized towns, plantations and most towns. The exception to the default “after 5pm” restriction is when there is a steady rain or the ground is completely covered in snow. Some communities, particularly those with full time fire departments, have elected to override the allowable burn times and have authorized burning during the daytime. Please read your permit carefully and only burn during the times listed.
Online Burn Permits are valid on Class 1 or Class 2 days. The person requesting the permit must verify the class day after 9:00AM on the day they intend to burn.
This system is for brush piles, wood debris and agricultural burns only.
Permits are only valid for 48 hours from the time they are purchased and can’t be purchased in advance
Does the Fire Department fill swimming pools or backyard ice rinks?
The Fire Department does NOT fill pools or ice rinks due to the liability. However you may call a local water company or pool company for service.
How do I call for an Emergency in Kingfield?
Dial 911 from your phone. Be prepared to give your name, location and the nature of the emergency so that our dispatchers may send the appropriate services as quickly as possible.
How do I join the Fire Rescue Department?
Applications are available at the Kingfield Town Office Monday through Friday 8am to 4pm. All applicants must be a minimum of 18 years of age and have a High School Diploma or equivalent, and no criminal record. We also offer a Junior Explorer Program for those ages 14 to 18 years old. All members are paid on a per-call basis.
Does the Fire Department conduct Chimney and Woodstove Inspections?
The Fire Department WILL conduct a Woodstove Inspection for proper placement in your home. We can also provide a “Courtesy” inspection of your chimney; however we do NOT provide a formal letter for your insurance company due to liability issues. We can make recommendations to the home owner.
Will the Fire Department clean my chimney for me?
No. The fire department does not provide chimney sweep services as there are too many liabilities and issues that may arise. There are licensed professionals that perform cleanings.
Chimney sweeps inspect, clean and repair residential and commercial chimneys. The traditional method of cleaning chimneys involves a two-step process in which the sweep brushes from the top of the chimney outside the building, and then finishes by sweeping and cleaning the fire box from inside the premises. There are a lot of risks that are associated with operating a chimney sweep.
Liability of a volunteer firefighter, a fire department, or a municipality depends upon all the facts and circumstances in each particular case and, therefore we refrain from actions such as this that could be determined by the courts as negligent.
